Some history about Corwin B."Corky" Coker.
Corwin B. "Corky" Coker was born September 26, 1932 to Bryant and Edna Coker. He was raised in the Bunker community and attended Oak Hill Baptist Church. He was saved and baptized on July 14, 1946. His mother (affectionally known to everyone as"Grandma") still attends church at Oak Hill.
Corky's great-grandfather, Bryant Coker, born in 1836, was the first clerk for Oak Hill Baptist Church. Bryant and his wife were charter members. Corky's grandfather, Sears Coker led the singing during the 1940's and Corky was given the opportunity to follow in his foot steps at the young age of 17. He has been the song leader/music director for Oak Hill Baptist Church ever since, some 55 years!
Ordained as a deacon in the Oak Hill Baptist Church on September 28, 1958, at the age of 26. Corky is the youngest man to be ordained in this church. He served as Chairman of the Board of Deacons for many, many years. Other positions Corky has served Oak Hill in are treasurer, Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent and music advisor.
In the early 1950's, his musical talent gave him the opportunity to lead the music in numerous revivals in various churches in the surrounding area; including Wauchula Hills, North Hillsboro, Mt. Ephriam, South Side, and Ft. Ogden. He also led the music for a revival in Charlotte Harbor where Rev. E. T. Earnest was pastoring. (Rev. Earnest later came to pastor at Oak Hill for over twenty years.)
Corky has sang at hundreds of funerals in DeSoto and surrounding counties, sometimes for people that he did not know. He was a member of the Peace Valley Quartet for many years. They "preached the gospel" with their wonderful singing! The quartet performed not only in DeSoto and neighboring counties, but went as far as Tennessee and Arkansas, sharing their God given talents.
On July 24, 1955, Corwin B. Coker married Faye Westberry. Corky and Faye have raised five children in the house they still live in today. Faye begins many happy stories with. "now people, if these walls could talk!" With brothers, sisters, children, 8 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, and many friends all coming and going, many fun-filled hours have been spent in their home.
Corky's 6-year battle with cancer has kept him from his beloved church in recentweeks. Members of his church family lift him up to the Lord each day. The evidence of this honor can be felt by just talking to anyone at Oak Hill, "We just plain love this man!." "His example of how to live a life in the service of our Lord or "keep on keeping on" as Corky calls it, has always been and continues to be a great encouragement and inspiration to us all.
